A day in my life: Locum Vet
We wanted to ask one of our great Locums a few questions to provide some insight into their lives and why they do what they do.
This is the response:
➡️ What made you want to be a Vet?
“Honestly it came naturally… my passion for medicine and a genuine love for animals made the decision to go into vet med a no brainer!” 🩺
➡️ What are the most enjoyable parts of your job?
“Seeing a patient walking out the consult door healed and happy.” ☺️
➡️ How long did you have to study?
“I studied for 6 years… not to mention endless hours of CPD and another intense year of postgrad certification.” 🎓
➡️What would you say to anyone wanting to join the industry?
“That school won’t prepare you enough for the reality of practising vet med.”
➡️What does a normal workday look like for you?
“My usual day (as a consulting GP) usually starts with 15-20 minutes pre-shift checking my diary for my upcoming consults, getting familiar with the cases and catching up with results or repeat prescriptions. Then consulting begins for about 4 hours straight followed by a bit of lunch which is usually spent catching up with clinical records, phone-calls, or discussing cases with colleagues. This is followed by another 4 hours or so of consults. Depending on consults and workload I might have to stay late to discharge patients or call clients with their blood results etc.”
➡️ What are the benefits of using an agency?
“ Personally I love working with an agency. I Love working with JR recruitment in particular because they know my needs and my abilities so I never have to worry about finding work and always know they will have my best interest when they book me in for a practice. It takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders knowing that there’s always someone available to discuss my concerns.”
➡️ What do you do to relax?
“Travelling when I can, reading or audiobooks, discovering new music or going to gigs, socialising with friends.” ✈️
